The Right to a Speedy and Public Trial

Promote accountable and efficient justice systems, and prevent unnecessary jail time.
The right to a speedy and public trial protects against a number of abuses of power in criminal cases. For one, it requires that someone accused of a crime be tried within a reasonable period of time after arrest or citation. This safeguards against people being confined in jail for a long time without having been found guilty of a crime. Furthermore, this right helps ensure that witnesses are still available and knowledgeable about the facts of the case, and that evidence is preserved for trial. Additionally, the right to a public trial helps keep courts and prosecutors accountable.
